What is Mumbai-style Indian street food? Indo-Chinese, explained

So what is Mumbai-style Indian street food? It’s Indo-Chinese, sometimes called Mumbai-Chinese: the fiery, wok-tossed food you will find on Mumbai’s streets and at its late-night stalls. It’s what we cook here, so if you’re expecting butter chicken and naan, this isn’t that kind of restaurant.

Chinese cooking arrived in India generations ago and was reshaped by Indian kitchens. Soy sauce met green chillies, ginger, garlic and curry leaf. Woks met masala. What came out is now one of the most loved food styles in Mumbai: Hakka noodles, Schezwan rice, Manchurian, Chicken 65, crunchy bhel and fiery lollipops.

That’s what we cook, fast and hot, in a wok, the way it’s done back home. Our founders, Mr. VJ and Mr. Roy, bring more than 30 years of hospitality experience to the kitchen, and the idea behind the restaurant was simple: bring the taste of Mumbai’s streets to Paisley.

Dishes worth ordering on your first visit

Not sure where to start? These are the dishes we’d point you to first if you are after affordable Indian food near Paisley train station that still feels like a proper meal.

  • Triple Schezwan Rice. Our chef’s favourite. Fried rice, noodles and spicy Schezwan gravy layered into one big, fiery plate, available in vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions. It’s a meal in itself and easily shared.
  • Aamchi Mumbai Delight. Our house special and the dish that gives the restaurant its name. Omelette, chicken gravy, rice and fried noodles in our home-made sauce. It’s inspired by the late-night tawa stalls of Mumbai, and it’s the closest thing on the menu to a proper Mumbai street meal.
  • Chicken Lollipop and Mumbai Bhel. A good pairing to start with: one hot, spiced and crispy, the other cold, crunchy and tangy.
  • Chicken 65. A dry, punchy starter with curry leaf and mustard seed that suits anyone who likes a bit of heat.

The new Aamchi Scots menu: Mumbai-Chinese with more herbs and less spice

Our newest addition is a chef-curated Aamchi Scots menu. It’s the same Mumbai-Chinese street food you know, cooked with more herbs and less spice. That makes it a good place to start if you love big flavour but not too much fire. It’s split into starters, main courses and sides, and here are some of the dishes:

Starters

  • Aamchi Squids: Golden battered squids tossed in a punchy soya and garlic glaze.
  • Mumbai Prawns: King prawns sautéed with garlic and pepper in a smooth, house-made cream sauce.
  • Honey Glazed Chicken: Crispy chicken strips coated in a glossy honey glaze with a delicate sweetness.
  • VJ’s Chicken Special: Tender chicken strips wok-tossed with julienne peppers and savoury soya sauce.
  • Stir Fried Lamb: Tender diced lamb stir-fried in aromatic Mumbai masala with crunchy cashew nuts.
